The B-2 Spirit was developed during the Cold War and first flew on 17 July 1989. It entered operational service with the United States Air Force in 1997.
A total of 21 aircraft were built, including one prototype used for testing. However, 20 B-2 Spirits were originally delivered for operational use. In 2008, one aircraft was lost in a crash at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, leaving 19 B-2 bombers in service today.
The small production number was mainly due to the end of the Cold War and the aircraft’s extremely high cost, with each bomber costing over $2 billion when development expenses are included.
