“This photograph comes from a series made in Brighton and Hove in 2010, featuring objects and creatures from the local surroundings which I introduced into the body of my camera. I like to think of these photographs as in-camera photograms, where conflict or harmony is randomly formed in the final image depending on where the objects landed. I used a magnifying glass to concentrate sunlight on some of the negatives in order to etch markings directly onto the image, whilst other negatives were dipped in the sea.”

A survey retrospective exhibition of Stephen Gill’s work spanning 39 years will take place at Arnolfini in Bristol from 16 October 2021 to 16 January 2022.
