This zoomorphic French Majolica slip pitcher, titled Canard dans les Roseaux (“Duck in the Reeds”), was produced by the Onnaing Pottery in northern France between 1910 and 1914. A striking example of early 20th-century European Majolica, it features richly colored enamel over a heavy clay body, glazed to a glossy finish.

The pitcher is modeled as a tall duck nestled among reeds, a whimsical yet finely detailed form that reflects Onnaing’s signature naturalistic style. These animal and nature-themed designs, often adorned with water lilies, moss, or herons, are among the most collectible examples of antique Majolica today.

Marked with an impressed shield surmounted by a crown and the words "Frie" to the left and "Onnaing" to the right. "MADE IN FRANCE" is below, indicating this was made for the export market between 1910 and 1914. Note the incised "Y" indicating the artist's mark: rare. Majolica from this period is lead-glazed earthenware, suitable for decorative use only. It is not considered safe for food or drink.

Measures approximately 9½" tall.

Condition: Firing cracks from its time cooling in the kiln are visible on the head, and there is fine overall crazing. No chips or repairs.

A charming piece of French Majolica, perfect for collectors or display in a kitchen, conservatory, or eclectic interior.
