These pieces feature canaries and the gul-e-sap, or apple blossom motif, typical of Hazara cross stitch embroidery. Women have been sewing this same flower for generations and the tree is prevalent across the country - there's even a festival to celebrate the blossom's flowering. Within Hazara culture they also hold romantic significance as a term of endearment: one lover might say to the other, "you're my apple blossom", while the kanary is one of many songbirds beloved in Afghanistan.
